What AI Cannot Decide for Us

BEFORE YOU READ

What is a decision you would want to make yourself, even if an AI tool could recommend an answer?

READ

Before an AI tool can help solve a problem, someone must decide what the problem is. That decision may sound straightforward, but the wording of a task can shape every answer that follows. Asking how to complete a process faster directs attention toward speed. Asking how to make the same process easier for beginners may lead to different recommendations. Both questions concern improvement, yet they define success differently.

Imagine a community learning center preparing a schedule of classes. One possible goal is to attract the largest number of registrations. Another is to provide classes for people whose needs are not being met elsewhere. A third is to keep operating costs low. These goals may overlap, but they can also conflict. A class with limited enrollment might still serve an important purpose. A popular class might require resources the center cannot afford.

An AI tool could help compare proposed schedules, organize information, or identify possible conflicts. However, a recommendation would still depend on the priorities and constraints included in the task. If the request emphasizes enrollment, an answer that favors popular classes may be consistent with that instruction. The recommendation does not establish that enrollment should be the center’s highest priority.

This distinction becomes important whenever a decision involves competing values. Fairness, convenience, accessibility, quality, and cost do not always point toward the same choice. Even people who agree that all five matter may disagree about how much weight each should receive. A technical-looking answer can make those judgments less visible without removing them.

Responsibility also extends beyond choosing among the options presented. The available options may be incomplete. A schedule that seems impossible under existing conditions might become workable through a different location, a shorter course, or a partnership with another organization. Evaluating an answer includes asking whether the original question restricted the possibilities too soon.

Using AI thoughtfully therefore involves more than selecting the most appealing recommendation. People still need to define the purpose, examine assumptions, consider whose needs are represented, and take responsibility for the final choice. A tool can assist with the reasoning, but the people affected by a decision must live with its consequences. That makes the definition of success a human responsibility.
