This is English w/ Nabi, and today’s tricky words are adVICE / adVIZE, sepaRATE / sepaRIT, and reCORD / REH-kord. Let’s start with advice and advise.

·       Advice with a C is a noun. It is something you give, receive, or follow.

·       Advise with an S sounds like Z, and it is a verb. It means to guide someone or suggest what they should do. Remember: if the sentence needs an action, use advize with an S.

Now separate and separit.

·       When it means “not together,” we say sepaRIT, as in “separate rooms.”

·       when it means “to divide,” we say sepaRATE, as in “separate the papers.”

Now rehcord and reecord. Be careful where you place the stress.

·       stress is on the first syllable, REH-kord, it is usually a noun: “I have a driving record.”

·       stress is on the second syllable, reeCORD, it is a verb. There is action: “I can record a video.”

You may hear Native speakers say the verb reecord a few different ways, like ree-CORD, ri-CORD, or re-CORD. That is normal in conversation. Now take the quiz and see what you understood.
