Keeping Things You Rarely Use

READ

A cupboard holds an extra bowl, an old camera bag, and a small appliance that has not been used in months. None of these items is broken, but each takes up space. Deciding what to keep can be difficult when something might be useful again, even if there is no immediate plan to use it.

Keeping an item can prevent the need to replace it later. Some objects are used only for a particular task or at certain times of the year. A rarely used tool may still be valuable when the right job appears. However, storing too many things can make everyday items harder to find.

Letting useful objects go can create room and make a home easier to organize. Someone else may use an item more often. Still, replacing it later could cost money or take time. The decision becomes more difficult when the item has a personal connection or is hard to find.

People use different methods to decide. Some consider how recently they used something, while others think about realistic future needs. A box set aside for later review can provide time to decide. The amount of available storage also matters, since an object that fits easily in one home may crowd another.

VIEWPOINT ONE

I would rather let things go if I don't have a clear use for them. A room feels more comfortable when I can find what I need easily. Keeping something only because I might want it someday can leave me with far more than I use.

VIEWPOINT TWO

I agree that too many things can become a problem, but recent use isn't my only test. Some tools are useful only occasionally. If an item works well, is difficult to replace, and has a proper storage space, I may keep it.
