The Waiting Room
Listen To The Following Reading
It was a few minutes later than her appointment time when Lillian glanced up from her magazine. The clinic was unusually quiet for a Wednesday afternoon. A faint scent of disinfectant hung in the air, mixed with the low hum of the air conditioner. The clock ticked loudly in the silence.
Across the room sat a young man in a navy jacket, bouncing his knee rapidly. His fingers fiddled with a small silver ring, turning it round and round. An older woman sat two chairs away, staring at the door as if willing it to open.
Lillian tried to return to her magazine, but her mind wandered. The receptionist smiled politely from behind the counter. “They’ll be right with you,” she said, though her tone hinted she’d said it a hundred times before.
Moments later, the door opened. A doctor stepped out and called a name—“Mrs. Harper?” The older woman stood, smoothing the wrinkles from her coat. Before she left, she gave the young man a reassuring smile. “It’ll be fine,” she whispered.
He nodded without looking up. Lillian watched him closely, recognizing that silent fear—waiting for news that could change everything.
When her own name was called, she closed the magazine and stood. She smiled at the young man before leaving the room. He looked up briefly and smiled back.
As she followed the doctor down the hall, she thought, We’re all holding our breath in one way or another—each of us pretending to keep it together until life lets us exhale.
