The Misunderstood Compliment
Listen To The Following Reading
Sophie and Daniel had worked together for a few months. During a team meeting, Sophie complimented Daniel on how quickly he solved a problem. Everyone laughed when she joked, “You make the rest of us look slow!” Later, she noticed Daniel acting distant and quiet.
That afternoon, Sophie told her coworker,
“I thought I was being nice. I wanted to break the ice a little and lighten the mood. I didn’t mean to come across as sarcastic or make him uncomfortable. Maybe I should’ve thought it through before saying it in front of everyone. I was only trying to show appreciation.”
Meanwhile, Daniel sat in the break room, still thinking about her words.
“It might’ve sounded like a joke, but it really caught me off guard. I’ve been trying to fit in since I joined the team, and that comment just made me feel singled out. I didn’t want to make a fuss, so I just smiled, but it definitely stuck with me. Maybe she didn’t mean anything by it, but it hit harder than she realized.”
