1. Start with a Warm-Up (1–2 minutes)
Ask the student:
“Are there any unfamiliar words or phrases you want me to explain before we continue?”
Ask 1–2 simple questions connected to the topic to activate background knowledge.
Example: “What kind of weather affects you the most?”
2. Read the Passage Together
Have the student read the passage aloud or listen quietly while you read.
Pause only for major vocabulary, not every sentence.
Allow them to experience the flow of the paragraph.
3. Check Understanding (3–4 questions)
Use the built-in comprehension questions.
Guide them to answer in complete sentences, even if short.
Encourage:
“Tell me in your own words.”
“Try to use the new vocabulary.”
4. Summary Practice
This is the main skill for EMPOWERED.
Help them:
Capture only the most important points
Avoid copying sentences
Use simple, clear language
If needed, offer sentence starters:
“The passage explains that…”
“Another main idea is…”
5. Paraphrasing Exercise
Show them how to say one idea in a different way.
Steps for tutors:
Read the original sentence together.
Ask: “What is the writer trying to say?”
Help the student reduce the sentence to fewer words.
Check clarity—short but correct.
6. Light Discussion (Optional, 1–2 minutes)
Ask one or two open questions:
“Does this happen in your country?”
“Why do you think this is important?”
This keeps the lesson conversational without going off track.
7. Quick Review Before Ending
Review 2–3 vocabulary words or phrases from the passage and ask the student to use each in a short sentence.
