Tutor Guide for
ESSENTIAL Readers
Step 1 — Warm-Up (1–2 minutes)
Activate background knowledge:
“What time do you wake up?”
“Do you eat breakfast in the morning?”
Step 2 — First Reading (Student Reads Aloud)
Correct only pronunciation that impacts understanding or comprehension of the information.
Step 3 — Check New Vocabulary (Very Important)
Ask:
“Are there any new words or phrases? Let’s look at them together.”
Explain → give a quick example → confirm understanding.
Step 4 — Summary (Key Step)
Have the student summarize the story in 3–5 sentences.
Use prompts if needed: “First… then… next…”
Step 5 — Comprehension Questions
Ask the simple “Answer from the Story” questions.
Encourage full-sentence answers.
Step 6 — Extended Conversation
Use the 5 “Your Thoughts” questions to build speaking confidence.
Step 7 — Final Review (1 minute)
Ask:
“What did you learn today?”
“What new words can you remember?”
“Can you summarize the story again in 30 seconds?”
