Scenario 07

The Unused Reservation

READ

Four friends reserved a table at a busy restaurant for Friday evening. Tessa made the reservation because the restaurant required one person to provide a phone number. They agreed to arrive at seven. Tessa and Amir reached the restaurant a few minutes early and were shown to their table.

At seven ten, Rachel sent a message saying that she and Ben were still shopping nearby. They expected to arrive in about twenty minutes. Tessa had already ordered water, but she wanted to wait before choosing food. Amir had skipped lunch and was ready to eat.

A server explained that another group had reserved the table for eight thirty. Rachel then sent a photograph of a different restaurant and suggested that everyone meet there instead. Ben liked its menu better, and they were already standing outside. Neither had asked whether Tessa and Amir had been seated.

Amir wanted to remain where they were. Tessa worried that leaving would waste the restaurant's table, but she also wanted the group to spend the evening together. Rachel called while the server was approaching with menus. On the phone, Ben could be heard asking someone at the other restaurant how long a table for four would take.

THINK AND RESPOND

  2. If you could offer advice to one of the characters, who would it be and why?
