Scenario 18

The Shift Request

READ

At a small bookstore, Audrey and Colin worked different Saturday shifts. Audrey opened the store, and Colin arrived in the afternoon. Colin asked Audrey to switch one weekend because he wanted to attend a short course. Audrey agreed, although the later shift meant changing plans with her sister.

The next week, Colin asked for another switch. The course instructor had added a practice session, and Colin did not want to miss it. Audrey had arranged to help her sister move a desk that afternoon. Her sister had borrowed a vehicle for a limited time and expected Audrey to be there.

Colin said Audrey was the only coworker whose hours matched his request. He reminded her that he had covered part of her shift several months earlier. Audrey remembered that occasion, but she had stayed late for him on other days too. The store manager allowed swaps as long as the employees agreed.

Colin needed to confirm his place in the practice session by noon. He placed the shift-change form on the counter and asked Audrey to think about it before the morning rush. Audrey's sister had just sent a photo of the desk and a message confirming the pickup time. The manager was opening the front door.

THINK AND RESPOND

  1. What would you do?

  2. If you could offer advice to one of the characters, who would it be and why?
