Scenario 17
The Unexpected Extra Guest
READ
Leah invited three friends to her apartment for a simple dinner. She had a small table, four chairs, and enough ingredients for the people she expected. One friend, Miles, offered to arrive early and help prepare the food. Leah appreciated the offer because she would be coming home directly from work.
An hour before dinner, Miles sent a message saying that his cousin Evan was visiting. He wanted to bring Evan along rather than leave him alone. Leah had never met Evan. Miles described him as easygoing and said he would be happy with whatever food was available.
Leah's other guests had already confirmed. One of them, Grace, had hoped to discuss a problem with a course she was taking and had asked for a quiet evening with familiar people. Leah had not mentioned Grace's request to Miles. She also did not have another dining chair, although there was space on the couch.
Miles then called from a store and offered to buy extra food. Evan was with him, and Leah could hear him asking which snack to bring. A pot was heating on her stove while the table remained set for four. Miles asked whether they should come straight over or make another stop first.
