Scenario 24
The Display by The Door
READ
At a neighborhood bookstore, employees could suggest books for a small display near the entrance. This month, Farah selected a collection of short stories and wrote descriptions for each title. Her coworker, Neil, chose practical guides about cooking, drawing, and home projects. Only one collection would fit on the table.
The manager asked them to agree on a display before Friday. Farah wanted to use the stories because several regular customers had asked for shorter books. Neil preferred the practical guides because new customers often looked for useful activities. Both had brought examples and spent time preparing their suggestions.
Farah proposed dividing the table, but Neil thought both groups would look crowded and incomplete. He suggested using his guides first and displaying her stories the following month. Farah had been told something similar during the previous planning meeting, although a delivery delay had changed that month's arrangement.
A shipment of books arrived while they were discussing the table. The manager asked which titles should be unpacked first so the staff could attach price labels. Farah's descriptions were already printed, and Neil had made a sign for his collection. A regular customer entered and stopped beside the empty display, waiting for someone to help her find a book.
THINK AND RESPOND
What would you do?
If you could offer advice to one of the characters, who would it be and why?
