Scenario 23

The Course They Chose Together

READ

Julian and Rosa signed up for an evening cooking course together. Rosa had suggested it because she wanted to learn several basic techniques. Julian already cooked often, but he liked the idea of spending time with his friend. They paid for six sessions and arranged to share rides.

After the second class, Julian felt the course was too basic. The instructor spent a long time demonstrating skills he already knew. Rosa appreciated the slower pace because she needed time to practice. She had also felt more comfortable joining because Julian would be there.

Julian discovered an advanced workshop held on the same evening in another part of town. A place had become available, but he needed to claim it soon. The original course did not offer a refund after the first session. Rosa did not drive, and reaching the class by bus would require two connections.

Rosa offered to practice the basic tasks at home so they might move more quickly during class. Julian said the instructor controlled the pace, not the students. He had the advanced workshop registration open on his phone. Rosa was checking the bus schedule and asking whether he still planned to drive them to the next lesson.

THINK AND RESPOND

  1. What would you do?

  2. If you could offer advice to one of the characters, who would it be and why?
