Scenario 20
The Repair Estimate
Diana took an older lamp to a repair shop because it flickered whenever she moved the switch. The lamp had been in her living room for years, and she liked its shape. The shop owner, Felix, said he would examine it and call with an estimate before doing any work.
Later that day, Felix explained that the repair would cost almost as much as a new lamp from a nearby store. He said a replacement switch was available, but matching the original part exactly would not be possible. The new switch would look slightly different. Diana asked for time to think.
Her brother, Martin, offered to help her choose a new lamp. He thought paying that much for an old item made little sense. Diana had already looked at several replacements and disliked their size or appearance. Martin said she might need to accept a different style instead of searching for the same design.
Felix could order the part that afternoon, but the next order would not go out until the following week. Diana was at home with an empty space beside her chair. Martin sent a link to a discounted lamp while Felix left a message asking whether he should add the switch to his order.
THINK AND RESPOND
What would you do?
If you could offer advice to one of the characters, who would it be and why?
