Scenario 13
The Last Seat in the Workshop
READ
A community center offered a small drawing workshop with limited space. Renee registered early and paid the fee. Her friend Isabel waited because she was unsure about her work schedule. By the time Isabel was available, the workshop was full. She asked Renee to let her know if anyone canceled.
On the morning of the class, Renee arrived to find an empty chair beside her. The instructor, Malcolm, explained that a registered student had called to say she would be twenty minutes late. Isabel was in the lobby and noticed the chair through the open door.
Isabel asked whether she could use the place until the other student arrived. Malcolm said the materials were prepared for each registered participant. Isabel offered to share Renee's supplies and stand later if necessary. Renee wanted her friend to join, but the room was small and the tables were already crowded.
Other students were beginning to open their materials. Malcolm needed to start the demonstration and had not answered Isabel's latest suggestion. Renee's supplies included one drawing board and a single set of paper. Isabel stood beside the empty chair, holding her own pencil case. At the front desk, a staff member was checking the list of registered students.
