Word of the Day: ALREADY

Your goal: Use already to explain that something happened before now.

REVIEW

ALREADY means something has happened or is finished.

“I already ate” means you ate before now.

Use already in responses such as I already checked, I already called, and I’m already here.

CHOOSE TWO AND RESPOND

Read each question aloud. Choose two responses that make sense together. Use already in at least one. Say them together as your answer. Then try a different combination.

“Would you like some lunch?”

  • I already ate.

  • Thanks for offering.

  • I already had lunch.

  • I’m not hungry now.

  • I already ordered something.

  • It should be here soon.

“Do you need help with the form?”

  • I already finished it.

  • Thanks for checking.

  • I already filled it out.

  • I’ll turn it in now.

  • I already asked someone.

  • She explained the last part.

“Can you call the office?”

  • I already called.

  • No one answered.

  • I already left a message.

  • I’m waiting for a call back.

  • I already spoke to someone.

  • She answered my question.

“Are you coming to the meeting?”

  • I’m already here.

  • I’m near the entrance.

  • I already signed in.

  • I saved you a seat.

  • I’m already in the room.

  • The meeting hasn’t started.

“Do you need the directions?”

  • I already have them.

  • You sent them yesterday.

  • I already checked the address.

  • It’s close to my office.

  • I already saved the location.

  • I know where to go.

COMPLETE THE RESPONSE

Choose a word from the box. You may use a word more than once. More than one answer may work.

ate • called • finished • checked • here • ordered

  1. “Do you want breakfast?”
“I already _____, but thank you.”

  2. “Can you contact the store?”
    “I already _____. They’re open.”

  3. “Do you need more time?”
    “No. I already _____.”

    “Yes. I already _____.”

  5. “Will you arrive soon?”
    “I’m already _____.”

  6. “Are you ready to choose your food?”
    “I already _____.”

EXTEND THE CONVERSATION

Choose an ending. Say the whole response aloud.

“Should I call the office?”

“I already called. _____”

  • They’ll contact us later.

  • I left a message.

  • They answered my question.

“Do you need help?”

“I already finished. _____”

  • Thanks for offering.

  • I’ll show you my work.

  • Let me know if you need help.

“Are you on your way?”
