Ordering at a New Restaurant
Intro Recording:
“You are hungry and excited to try a new restaurant. You brought a friend with you, but your friend does not speak proper English. You will order food, correct your friend’s English, and communicate with the waiter.”
After each recording, the student responds naturally.
WAITSTAFF: “Welcome! Table for two?”
→ Student responds.
FRIEND: “What him say?”
→ Student corrects the English and explains.
WAITSTAFF: “Would you prefer inside or outside seating?”
→ Student responds and translates.
WAITSTAFF: “Here are your menus. Let me know if you have any questions.”
→ Student responds.
FRIEND: “I not know this food. You tell me which good?”
→ Student explains options and corrects the English.
WAITSTAFF: “Can I start you off with something to drink?”
→ Student responds and translates.
WAITSTAFF: “Do you or your friend have any food allergies I should know about?”
→ Student answers and explains the question.
WAITSTAFF: “Are you ready to order, or do you need a few more minutes?”
→ Student responds.
FRIEND: “Is spicy? You ask him spicy?”
→ Student corrects the English and asks the waiter.
WAITSTAFF: “That dish actually contains nuts. Would you like to choose something else?”
→ Student responds and explains to the friend.
FRIEND: “No onion. You tell him no onion for me.”
→ Student corrects the English and makes the request.
WAITSTAFF: “No problem. Anything else you’d like to adjust?”
→ Student responds.
WAITSTAFF: “Would you like any appetizers while you wait?”
→ Student responds and translates.
FRIEND: “I change order. You ask him I change?”
→ Student corrects the English and communicates the change.
WAITSTAFF: “Can I get you anything else right now?”
→ Student responds politely.
FRIEND: “This not my food. Wrong food. You tell him.”
→ Student corrects the English and explains the issue to the waiter.
WAITSTAFF: “I’m so sorry. Would you like us to fix it or replace it?”
→ Student responds and explains both options to the friend.
WAITSTAFF: “How is everything tasting so far?”
→ Student responds.
FRIEND: “How say… I full… but want dessert?”
→ Student corrects the English and explains the phrase.
WAITSTAFF: “Would you like dessert or just the check today?”
→ Student responds.
FRIEND: “We share dessert? You ask him we share?”
→ Student corrects the English and communicates the request.
WAITSTAFF: “Here’s the check. Will you be paying with cash or card today?”
→ Student responds.
WAITSTAFF: “Please sign here whenever you’re ready.”
→ Student responds.
WAITSTAFF: “Thank you for coming in today. We hope to see you again soon.”
