Buying Clothes at a Store
Intro Recording:
“You and your friend are shopping for clothes at a store. Your friend does not speak proper English, so you will help translate, correct their English, and speak politely to the store employees.”
After each recording, the student responds naturally.
EMPLOYEE: “Hi there! Let me know if you need help finding anything.”
→ Student responds.
FRIEND: “Where shirt section? You ask him where shirt?”
→ Student corrects English + asks employee.
EMPLOYEE: “Shirts are on the left side, right past the jackets.”
→ Student responds and translates.
EMPLOYEE: “Are you looking for a specific size?”
→ Student responds.
FRIEND: “I need medium… but maybe too small. How I say medium but bigger?”
→ Student corrects English and explains.
EMPLOYEE: “If you’d like, I can bring you a larger size to try on.”
→ Student responds.
EMPLOYEE: “The fitting rooms are open if you want to try anything.”
→ Student responds.
FRIEND: “I no know fitting room. What is fitting room mean?”
→ Student corrects English + explains.
EMPLOYEE: “You can try your clothes on in the second room to the right.”
→ Student responds.
FRIEND: “This shirt no fit good. You tell him I need bigger one.”
→ Student corrects English + requests size change.
EMPLOYEE: “Sure, I’ll grab a larger size for you.”
→ Student responds.
EMPLOYEE: “Here you go. Let me know how that one fits.”
→ Student responds.
FRIEND: “This good but color I not like. You ask other color?”
→ Student corrects English + asks employee.
EMPLOYEE: “Yes, it comes in blue, black, and green. Which one would you like?”
→ Student responds with choice + translates.
FRIEND: “Price how much? You ask him?”
→ Student corrects English + asks for price.
EMPLOYEE: “That one is on sale today for twenty-nine ninety-nine.”
→ Student responds.
FRIEND: “He talk too fast. You tell me again slow?”
→ Student corrects English + explains price again.
EMPLOYEE: “If you’re ready to check out, I can ring you up at the counter.”
→ Student responds.
EMPLOYEE: “Will you be paying with cash or card today?”
→ Student responds.
EMPLOYEE: “Thank you! Don’t forget your receipt. Have a wonderful day.”
→ Student responds with a polite goodbye.
