Grocery Shopping
Intro Recording:
“You and your friend are grocery shopping. Your friend does not speak proper English, so you will help translate, correct their English, and speak politely to store employees.”
After each recording, the student responds naturally.
EMPLOYEE: “Hi there! Can I help you find anything today?”
→ Student responds.
FRIEND: “Where bread? You ask him where bread?”
→ Student corrects the English + asks the employee.
EMPLOYEE: “Bread is in aisle five, on the right side.”
→ Student responds and translates.
EMPLOYEE: “Are you looking for a specific type of bread?”
→ Student responds.
FRIEND: “I want soft bread… not hard bread. How say that?”
→ Student corrects English + explains.
FRIEND: “Milk where? I no see milk anywhere.”
→ Student corrects English + asks employee.
EMPLOYEE: “Milk is in the back, near the dairy section.”
→ Student responds and translates.
EMPLOYEE: “Do you need help choosing anything?”
→ Student responds.
FRIEND: “What is this? Why milk say 2%? What 2% mean?”
→ Student corrects English + explains meaning.
EMPLOYEE: “We also have almond milk, oat milk, and lactose-free options if you prefer.”
→ Student responds.
FRIEND: “I want banana… but this green. You ask more yellow banana?”
→ Student corrects English + asks employee.
EMPLOYEE: “Yes, we have riper bananas in the back. I can bring some out.”
→ Student responds.
FRIEND: “How much these cost? Price not on here.”
→ Student corrects English + asks employee.
EMPLOYEE: “Those apples are $1.29 per pound.”
→ Student responds and explains to friend.
FRIEND: “One pound what? I no understand pound.”
→ Student corrects the English + explains measurement.
EMPLOYEE: “If you’d like, we have self-checkout available, or I can check you out here.”
→ Student responds.
EMPLOYEE: “Do you need bags today?”
→ Student responds.
FRIEND: “Bag cost money? Why bag cost now?”
→ Student corrects English + explains.
EMPLOYEE: “Your total comes to thirty-four sixty.”
→ Student responds.
EMPLOYEE: “Will that be cash or card?”
→ Student responds.
EMPLOYEE: “Here’s your receipt. Thank you for shopping with us!”
→ Student responds with a polite goodbye.
