Scenario 03

The Extra Work

READ

Three classmates were preparing a presentation about local businesses. Elena gathered information, Sam designed the slides, and Jordan agreed to organize the examples and prepare the final speaking notes. They planned to combine their work on Wednesday, two days before the presentation.

On Wednesday morning, Jordan sent a message saying that his work schedule had changed. He had only collected two examples and had not started the speaking notes. He asked Elena and Sam to finish his section because they had already completed most of their own work.

Elena had another assignment due that evening. Sam could stay later, but he had already spent extra time fixing the photographs Jordan sent. Jordan said he would be able to rehearse on Thursday and could speak for a larger part of the presentation. He believed that would balance the amount of work.

The instructor expected every group member to contribute but had not explained how different tasks should be compared. Sam opened the unfinished section and began listing the missing pieces. Elena asked Jordan whether he could work on it after his shift. Jordan replied that he would be tired and could not promise anything. Their shared document showed several blank slides beneath his name.

THINK AND RESPOND

  1. What would you do?

  2. If you could offer advice to one of the characters, who would it be and why?
