Types of Verbs

Action Verb - Shows what someone or something does (run, jump, think).

  • She paints beautiful landscapes.

  • They play soccer after school.

  • I write stories every weekend.

Linking Verb - Connects the subject to more information (am, is, are, seem, become

  • The soup smells delicious.

  • He is very tired today.

  • The sky looks gray.

Helping Verb - Helps the main verb show tense or possibility (can, will, must, have, be).

  • She is running late today.

  • They have finished the project.

  • I will call you tomorrow.

Transitive Verb - Action verb that needs a direct object (He reads a book).

  • She bought a new car.

  • I wrote a letter to my friend.

  • He kicked the ball across the field.

Intransitive Verb - Action verb that does not need an object (She runs fast).

  • She sleeps peacefully.

  • We arrived early.

  • He jumps high.

Modal Verb - Expresses ability, permission, necessity, or possibility (can, could, may, might, must, should, would, shall, will).

  • I can swim across the pool.

  • You should study for the test.

  • We might visit the museum tomorrow.
