Idioms

Quizzes are provided for each section. Feel free to take them as many times as needed.

What is an Idiom?

An idiom is a common phrase that has a different meaning than the words suggest. You can’t understand it word-for-word — you must know the full expression.

Why Are Idioms Tricky?

The meaning is figurative, not literal. You have to learn them as set phrases.

Examples:

  • I’m on cloud nine. (very happy)

  • Don’t spill the beans. (don’t tell the secret)

  • She hit the books last night. (she studied hard)
