How to Find the Direct Object
A direct object is the person or thing that receives the action of the verb. It answers “what?” or “whom?” after the verb.
Find the verb (action word).
Ask “what?” or “whom?”
The answer is the direct object.
Examples of Direct Objects in Sentences
The direct object is in bold.
I kicked the ball.
(What did I kick? → the ball)She reads books every night.
(What does she read? → books)We invited our friends.
(Whom did we invite? → our friends)
Important Note
A sentence with a direct object must have a transitive verb (an action that needs an object).
Example:
I gave. → Incomplete.
I gave a gift. → Complete.
