Types of Prepositions

Preposition of Time - Shows a relationship to time (at, on, in, before, after).

  • The meeting starts at noon.

  • We will travel in December.

  • She was born on a Monday

Preposition of Place/Position - Shows a relationship to a place or position (in, on, under, next to, between).

  • The keys are on the table.

  • The cat is hiding under the bed.

  • The park is next to the library.

Preposition of Direction/Movement - Shows movement from one place to another (to, into, onto, across, toward).

  • She walked to the store.

  • The ball rolled into the garage.

  • He ran across the field.

Preposition of Agent/Instrument - Shows who or what caused something (by, with).

  • The book was written by a famous author.

  • She cut the paper with scissors.

  • The cake was decorated by her sister.

Preposition of Cause/Purpose - Shows the reason for something (because of, due to, for).

  • The game was canceled because of the rain.

  • He stayed home due to illness.

  • She studies hard for her future.
