What is Punctuation?

Period (.) - Ends a complete sentence.

Question Mark (?) - Ends a direct question.

  • Where are you going?

  • Did you eat already?

Exclamation Mark (!) - Shows strong feeling or command.

  • Watch out!

  • That’s amazing!

  • I can’t believe it!

Comma (,) - Separates words, ideas, or parts of a sentence.

  • I bought apples, oranges, and bananas.

  • After dinner, we went for a walk.

  • My brother, a teacher, lives nearby.

Apostrophe (’) - Shows possession or creates contractions.

  • That’s my seat. (= That is)

  • It’s cold today. (= It is)

  • Sarah’s phone is ringing. (possessive)

Quotation Marks (“ ”) - Show someone’s exact words.

  • She said, “I’ll be there soon.”

  • “Hello,” he whispered.

  • “Be quiet,” the teacher said.

Colon (:) - Introduces a list, explanation, or quote.

  • Bring these items: a pen, paper, and glue.

  • She has one goal: win the race.

  • Remember: always check your work.

Semicolon (;) - Connects two related sentences or separates complex list items.

  • I was tired; I still finished the job.

  • He likes tea; she prefers coffee.

  • The team is large; however, they work well together.
