How To Find an Indirect Object

An indirect object is the person or thing that receives the direct object. It tells to whom or for whom the action is done.

  1. Find the verb.

  2. Find the direct object (what or whom).

  3. Ask to whom or for whom the direct object is given or done.

Examples of Indirect Objects in Sentences

Indirect object is bolded, direct object is underlined

  • She gave me a gift.
    (To whom did she give the gift? → me)

  • He told his mom a story.
    (To whom did he tell a story? → his mom)

  • They sent the teacher an email.
    (To whom did they send an email? → the teacher)

Key Sentence Pattern

Subject + Verb + Indirect Object + Direct Object

You Can Also Use a Prepositional Phrase

  • She gave a gift to me.

  • He told a story to his mom.

  • They sent an email to the teacher.

(Both forms are correct!)
