Types of Conjunctions

Coordinating Conjunction - Connects words, phrases, or clauses of equal importance (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).

  • I wanted coffee, but I chose tea.

  • She is smart and hardworking.

  • We can go now, or we can wait.

Subordinating Conjunction - Connects a dependent clause to an independent clause (because, although, since, unless, while, after).

  • I stayed home because it was raining.

  • We left early although we were tired.

  • He finished his work after the meeting.

Correlative Conjunction - Pairs of words that work together to connect parts of a sentence (either...or, neither...nor, both...and, not only...but also).

  • Either you start now or you miss the bus.

  • Both the teacher and the students were excited.

  • Not only did he win, but also he set a record.
