A gerund is a verb + -ing that acts like a noun in a sentence. It can be the subject, object, or complement in a sentence.

Examples of Gerunds in Sentences

1. As the Subject of a Sentence

  • Swimming is good exercise.

  • Reading helps you learn.

  • Walking is relaxing.

2. As the Object of a Verb
(Some verbs are followed by a gerund.)

  • I enjoy cooking.

  • She stopped talking.

  • We finished cleaning the room.

3. After Prepositions
(A gerund always follows a preposition.)

  • He’s good at drawing.

  • We talked about leaving early.

  • She’s interested in learning Spanish.
